Evento comunitario educa sobre la adopción de menores de Puerto Rico

The organization «Adopt Now Puerto Rico» was presented in the city of Orlando where it offered details for the adoption of children who reside in 25 institutions on the island of Puerto Rico.

Sylvia Villafañe, founder and president of Adopta Ahora, spoke about her work and the organization’s mission, as well as the adoption process where more than 150 children between 6 and 17 years old yearn for a safe home.

«The cultural affinity of Puerto Ricans and other Hispanics in Central Florida, along with the desire of many local families to adopt, make the island an excellent option to explore.

She explained that the adoption process can be simpler and less expensive than adopting abroad, and that there is a cultural and language connection between Puerto Rican and Hispanic families with these children, which can facilitate the adaptation process of the child and his or her new family.

More about Adopt Now

  • Promotes the adoption of children between 6 and 17 years old.
  • There are around 155 minors between these ages under the guardianship of the
Department of Family Affairs ready for adoption.
  •  These minors have less chance of being adopted due to false stigmas.
  • Myth: All adopted children have learning disabilities.
  • Reality: There are all kinds of children in the adopted population.
  • Myth: The younger the child is at the time of adoption, the more likely he or she will not have
    learning problems.
  • Fact: Just like biological children, adopting a young child is not an
absolute indicator that he or she will not have learning problems later in life.
  • Myth: The legal adoption process can take years.
  •  Fact: The new Law reduced the time period to adopt once the
    adoption petition is filed.
  • Myth: Biological parents could show up and claim their rights.
  • Fact: If the adoption is carried out with all legal guarantees, the adoptive father or mother
has full rights over the adopted child, it is irreversible.
